Earnings Calendar: Who will report what & when during this earnings season

On Friday 13th, JP Morgan Chase & Co. (symbol: JPM) will kick off the Q4 earnings season for the Dow 30 companies. Superstitious people may not like this day, but it shouldn’t spoil the solid prospects for the incoming earnings releases.

Calendar

Overall, analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect a 5.5% YoY increase in quarterly earnings for all 30 Dow components. That is a full percentage point better than the S&P 500 companies, which are expected to report a growth of 4.4%. Moreover, investors could expect even better earnings growth, as companies have the tendency to report better than expected numbers. During the previous earnings season, only 2 companies (Pfizer (symbol: PFE) and Walt Disney (symbol: DIS)) reported numbers that came in below consensus (see also: Q3 Earnings Watch). Still, the average earnings beat reached 9.8%, so investors might expect some rosy numbers yet again.

But what about top line growth? Next to solid earnings per share (EPS), revenue numbers are likely to come in higher as well. With 2.1% YoY growth, investors may rest assured that it’s not all about cost cutting that drives profits higher. Nevertheless, as we witnessed during the Q3 earnings season, not all companies may be able to match revenue expectations. Nine companies couldn’t match expectations, despite an average 1.0% revenue beat for all 30 Dow components.

Make no mistake: better-than-expected earnings are no guarantee for higher share prices. During the previous earnings season, 18 Dow components (more than half!) ended the day following the earnings release lower. However, there is a tendency for lower share prices after a miss on revenues. Only Disney and Nike (symbol: NKE) ended higher despite a revenue miss.

So, despite being an unpredictable outcome, it may be wise to be prepared and know what figures to expect. Even more so, the larger part of the Dow 30 components will also report full year figures. Probably most company boards will refrain from giving a full year 2017 guidance, but investors should keep their ears open for any indication what this year will bring.

Please find below the weekly schedules that show all analyst estimates of the individual Dow 30 components, starting with the full calendar to have a clear overview of what's to come.
